History of Pune: The Oxford of the East

Pune, in Maharashtra, is a culturally rich and historically significant city, long a center of education and progressive thought.

Maratha Heartland Pune's history is most famously linked to the Maratha Empire. In the 17th century, it became a stronghold for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The majestic Shaniwar Wada (built in 1732) served as the seat of the Peshwas (prime ministers of the Maratha Empire) and the political/military headquarters of the empire throughout the 18th century.

Colonial & Educational Hub The city fell under British control in the early 19th century but remained a center for intellectual activity. Institutions like Deccan College and Fergusson College were established, cementing its status as an educational pillar.

Modern Metropolis Post-1947, Pune transformed rapidly. Its reputation for research and education grew, attracting top institutions (e.g., IISER, NCL). Today, Pune is a modern, cosmopolitan city known for its IT sector, vibrant culture, and historic landmarks—a perfect blend of tradition and modernity.
